Melvil Dewey, the inventor of the Dewey Decimal System and also founder of the Lake Placid Club in New York, encourage the name change to Lake Placid. Since that time, the population has grown to a little over 2,500 residents. Other nicknames the town has acquired over the years is The Caladium Capital of the World and The Town of Murals.
